St Macdara’s Island County Galway
St Macdara (6C) founded a monastery on the island and the beautiful church is one of those few intact buildings in Ireland.
Although this stone church probably belongs to the 10C it is modelled completely on the wooden church preceding it.
Due to its size could it have been a tomb shrine for its founder. There is an enclosure round about and a couple of Cross Slabs dotted about. This Island is uninhabited there is only the sheep and complete silence.
